You see, the AMEX Gold Card offers the Gold Card Hotel Program. This program allows you to book hotels at a discounted rate if you stay in a participating hotel, which you can find at their Gold Card Destinations website. You can also earn $75 dining credits at the same participating hotels.
American Express Gold Card Overview
As with most American Express credit cards, this card comes with a variety of benefits. As mentioned above, this isn’t marketed as a rewards card but there is a rewards program attached to it. You can earn 1 point for every $1 that you spend using this card. You can visit the Earn Hub and earn 10 points for every $1 that you spend. Your points never expire and there is no cap on how many points you can earn.
In addition to baggage claim insurance, car rental insurance and travel accident insurance, this car also provides you with purchase protection. This includes:
- Fraud Protection Guarantee
- Purchase Protection
- Extended Warranty
- Return Protection
Essentially, these protections allow you to make a purchase and if it is lost, stolen, or broken within 90 days of purchase, AMEX will pay for it. What’s more, the extended warranty protection protects warranty items for an additional year. Lastly, if the merchant won’t take back something that you have purchased, AMEX will credit you for those purchases, up to $300.
American Express Gold Card Terms
As with most of their cards, AMEX doesn’t provide APR information on this card. There is an annual fee of $125, which is waived the first year after activation. There are no hidden fees with this card, no ATM fees, no cash advance fees and no penalty APR. If you make a foreign transaction, there is a 2.7% fee. Of course, there are also late payment and returned payment fees for you to consider.
Because there are new laws regarding returned and late payment fees, which you can read more about at the Federal Reserve (http://www.federalreserve.gov/consumerinfo/wyntk_creditcardrules2.htm), your initial late fee will be lower than future late fees ($25 versus $35).
American Express Gold Card Verdict
American Express credit cards in general tend to be great credit cards. However, there is a general lack of information regarding the APR that is worrisome. This definitely is not a bad credit credit card and may hold a higher interest rate for people with great credit. It is difficult to say whether this card will be a good choice.
