AmTrust Credit CardBefore applying for an AmTrust credit card offer online be sure to read this AmTrust credit card review. AmTrust Bank started out as the Ohio Savings Bank in Cleveland, Ohio, before branching out into a national provider of financial services. The bank’s name was changed to AmTrust in 2007.

In late 2009, the U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision shut down the Cleveland-based bank and all of its deposit accounts were transferred to New York Community Bank. But AmTrust is still operating under its own name, albeit as a division of New York Community Bank, and you can still open new accounts with AmTrust. And that certainly includes credit cards. AmTrust Bank has two credit cards for your consideration: the Platinum Plus Credit Card with WorldPoints Rewards and the Accelerated Rewards American Express Card.

AmTrust Credit Card Rewards at a Glance

The AmTrust Platinum Plus card offers the following rewards features:

  • One point per dollar spent
  • Points are valid for five years
  • There is no limit to the points you can earn
  • You can redeem points for cash, air travel without blackout dates, merchandise, gift certificates, car rentals, hotel stays, and even exclusive merchandise available only to WorldPoints participants
  • Access to the WorldPoints Mall, where you can also earn bonus points on your purchases

The AmTrust Accelerated Rewards card offers the following rewards features:

  • 1.25 points per dollar spent
  • Points are valid for five years
  • There is no limit to the points you can earn
  • You can redeem points for cash, air travel without blackout dates, merchandise, gift certificates, car rentals, hotel stays, and even exclusive merchandise available only to WorldPoints participants
  • Special offers for travel, dining, and shopping, provided by participating American Express merchants

The Bottom Line

All things considered, both of these AmTrust Bank credit cards are a decent rewards credit card option at face value, if all you want is a good credit card with a run-of-the-mill rewards program, or, in the case of the Accelerated Rewards American Express, an excellent rewards program. But it cannot be ignored that AmTrust recently had to turn to another bank for help due to financial difficulties.

The truth is that you can get a WorldPoints card from a variety of other banks, and the same goes for American Express. Unless you already bank with AmTrust and are willing to invest further in your banking relationship with this company, you’re probably better off looking for the same card with a different bank.

This is second Christmas that our card was suddenly cancelled. We did some major Christmas shopping at one store, and when we went to the next store, the card was denied. A phone call fixed the problem. But it is the Christmas season…the store I charged at was one that I always shop at. No phone call to inquire about the purchases….just an instant cancellation. I will be getting a different credit card immediately!
