DO NOT get a Belk card. CAVEAT EMPTOR: they have no way of tracking payments though electronic funds transfer. I made my payment through my banks (very reliable) online bill pay service. Three weeks later I received a bill from Belk with late fees and warnings that I had not paid the previous month’s bill. When I called customer service and gave them the date of the transaction, the amount, the EFT number, etc. they told me they would “file a statement” but that I was responsible for paying the whole amount again as they have no way to track electronic payments that come into them.

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH BELK. I’ve been patronizing them for 40 years and it stuns me how much their customer service has gone down hill over the past 5 years.

I gave Belf a second shot after a miserable experience in my 30′s. Once again, they’ve pulled a fast one, for one late payment after I payed double the minimum amount since I opened the card four years ago–they want to charge me a $35 late fee which (policy)doesn’t even go into effect for several months. they are a pathetic excuse for credit. Don’t do it. Nothin they sell is worth it. I’ll write them a check for $700 tomorrow and tell them to shove it.

I obtained a Belk card in 2009. I don’t need a Belk card but I got 15% off of my purchase if I got one so I did. I’ve used it a time or two since, but any time I have used it, I’ve always paid the balance in full. I last used it in December 2010.

Fast forward to April 2011. My father, who has the same name as me, went to make a purchase at Belk. They said there was a problem with his Belk card and that they would send him a new one. They asked him for his name and his ZIP code (I live in the same ZIP code, if you can see this one coming). So, they open up MY account and charge his purchase to it. Then he received a new Belk card in the mail (with both of our names on it, but with my account number, unbeknownst to him), and in May 2011, when he was in North Carolina, he made additional purchases. Combined, they totaled $187.

Now, dad waits for it to post on his account and it never does. Consequently, I got a call from Belk yesterday saying my account was past due and that I have already been charged a late fee. Needless to say, I get quite upset because I haven’t used my card. Imagine the Abbott and Costello routine that goes on in that discussion.

As my father and I have the same name and as we occasionally have to get our credit bureau reports straightened up because of the sloppy and unethical credit system we have here in the United States, I call him and asked if he’d made any purchases. The purchase in North Carolina clued me in because I knew he was there in May 2011. He confirmed he did make the purchases and was wondering why they didn’t post to his account.

So, I call Belk and they tell me that all he needed to access my account was my name and ZIP code when he made the purchase. The Belk clerk obviously is the one who made the mistake, but Belk should have security measures in place to prevent such mistakes. They removed the late fee and interest and told me my father could make the payment online.

Yesterday evening, we try to make the online payment but it is still showing the late fee and interest and I needed to know the actual balance. It was past 7:00 PM and the Belk customer service call center has closed. I gave my dad my bill and asked him to call and make the payment today.

My dad called Belk customer service THREE (3) times today and not only would they NOT let him pay off my account, but they told him it would cost $15 to pay over the phone and he was hung up on twice by the lovely Belk customer service idiots. None would let him make the payment.

Now, Belk employees violated my privacy by allowing unauthorized purchases to MY account; inappropriately put my father in an unpleasant situation by putting his purchases on his son’s account when all he was doing was trying to make legitimate purchases on his own account; and now they not only won’t let him pay it off, but they harass him and hang up on him three times in the process.

Belk customer service is pathetic. I do not recommend anyone doing business with Belk or utilizing their shoddy credit cards where one will have to deal with their pathetic customer service people.

I had a BELK Premiere card a few years ago, but I had stopped using it because the items in the store had gradually stopped being as attractive to me. Fast forward to 2011, and I wanted a pair of boots. I was somewhat coerced into opening the account by a friendly salesperson. She kept telling me how much money I would save by opening the account that very day. I caved in and opened the account. This seemed fine except for one thing — the boots, while seemed just fine in the store, had a strange odor (they were synthetic) after I got them home. I had paid the bill in full, but when I took the boots back, I was informed I could not have the money I paid for them. Instead, I could get a credit on my card OR I could get a Belk gift card. I did not want a credit on my card, as I never have even activated it. Additionally, a gift card locks the money up in THEIR store, and I was not so sure I wanted to spend my money on boots with them. I could understand this if I had not paid off my account, but I had! It’s not as though I was returning them for cash when I had not given the money out of pocket yet.

The whole issue bothered me from the start:

I had to move down to a “belk rewards” card when I was a “premiere” cardholder just a few years ago.

I never canceled my account, but apparently, they did, without notifying me.

I paid my bill in full, but upon a return, I could not have my money back (they already HAVE my money).

I’m ready to cancel my account and just use my regular nationally accepted credit card the next time (if ever) I want to purchase at Belk again. Oh, but wait — I must purchase at least the gift card amount at Belk, right? Otherwise, it’s just giving them my boots money for no product at all.

Thanks but no thanks, Belk. I have credit established already. Never again will I open a charge account with this store.

Two days ago I picked out some expensive Lenox dishes and wrote a check for $351 to purchase them. The clerk had trouble with my check; it wouldn’t clear so she called Belk’s check-security business. On the phone with this check-security business, the clerk asked me for my full name…spelled out, my birthdate, my driver’s license number, etc., etc. All this was very embarrassing as everyone standing in line behind me heard all this and they were annoyed and aware that I had apparently written a bad check. Finally the clerk informed me that they would not accept the check and I HAD to call Belk’s check-security business and the clerk gave me their phone number. I was mortified and flabbergasted. I went to the car and called them to find out what was going on. After extensive efforts on my part I finally got through and actually talked to a human being who works at Belk’s check-security business. That lady told me I had an excellent check writing history and that she had no idea why my check was rejected!! I called the 2nd in command at the local Belk and expressed my anger and frustration. She said she’d check into it and call me right back!! I got NO call, of course. Today I called the supreme, number-one honcho, Belk store manager and he said there was absolutely nothing he could do…that if their check-security business said to reject a check, they would reject the check!! I had $1,600 in that account at the time and several thousand dollars in a credit line for this account. I NEVER bounce a check!! What an incredible policy! I am still very angry at Belk for all the embarrassment, for assuming it was a bad check, for their pathetic reaction to my complaints. I cannot believe something like this could happen in USA in 2011. I have really had it with Belk. I’ll never step into that store again.

I have had nothing but trouble with my new Belk credit card, simply due to the shoddy customer service. I’ve been paying my credit card in full as soon as I charge something. On my online account, it said that I had no amount due and a zero balance but I only had $175 available credit. What the heck? So I called them and “DaQuisha” was very rude and and just kept repeating the same thing over and over, that my bank was holding the money. I asked to speak to a supervisior and got “LaQuisha” something or other, and she told me my bank was holding the funds of my last payments and if they didn’t get them, my account would be past due. I hung up and called my bank and they said the funds were paid and they gave me the tracing numbers. Called Belk back and thank the Lord, got a “Michael.” He said it wasn’t my bank holding the funds, it was their bank since it was so unusual for someone to make 2 full payments back to back and wanted to make sure there was no fraud. I still don’t get it but since he was so nice I let it go. I got their fax number, recalled the bank and told them to fax the trace numbers to Belk credit to freakin’ prove there was no fraud and as of right now, it’s partially fixed. I see more phone calls in my future to these morons. Time to cut up my credit card and mail it to them.

Belk Credit card sucks! Last month our payment is due on the 14th, so my husband tried to pay it on line or through the phone, but it does not work. So we have to drive 20 mins to the Belk store to pay for it on the 15th! You know what. Today we got an mail stating that they charged us 25 dollar fee for 149 dollars we spent in the store. This is the most terrible experience. It is not like we are not trying to pay for it. This is going to be the end of the belk card. I am going to cancel the card, and cut it into pieces. I am not going to sign up for any deportment store card any more. Belk ruined everything.

Do not get this card!!!! I have had it for 2 years. It is has a lot of limits on when you actually get discounts with it. You are better off with coupons.
I had also horrible experience with their automatic customer service.
Also, last time I had a balance of $21.80 and paid by the due date 20 dollars.
I was still hit by a 21.80 late fee because minimum payment should have been the whole amount. This is how they get the money in.
    I am canceling right now.

I made the mistake of getting a belk card trying to build some credit. I have had it for almost a year. I have received two late payment charges because the online payment system didn’t post them when I said to!!! After the second mistake I called customer service (which takes 20mins to talk to a real person) and they assured me that my account would be fine. Lo and behold, tried to use my card in the store and it was CLOSED. Spent an hour on the phone with customer service trying to get it reopened and telling them my ordeal. Long story short, she left me holding on the phone for 20-30mins. I finally hung up. Called again… was told to call another number the next day since they were closed. Called the next day to tell me there is nothing I can do that I could request another account that my previous one could not be opened again. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. There’s no way I’ll apply for another one. They must think that I am stupid. DON’T GET A BELK CARD!!!
