Read through this review of the Biodegradable Discover More Credit Card to see if this is the best credit card for you. Discover Card has been offering credit cards since 1986 ( unveiled that year during the Super Bowl). In addition to the cash back rewards Discover is known for offering, they have various promotional rates for cash advances and purchase transactions. Now they have added a green option to their credit card collection. The Biodegradable Discover More Credit Card is exactly what it says– it’s biodegradable.

The Problem with Plastic

Discover Card has now added a biodegradable card option, being the first company to offer a truly green credit card. The card is made of 99% biodegradable plastic, which means it will break down by 99% within five years of being in a landfill without leaving a toxic effect. This is huge news considering in the United States alone it is estimated that there will be more than a billion and a half cards in circulation during the year 20101. Add the projected 185 million debit cards and we’re talking about a landfill nightmare. Now consider the worldwide effect of credit card production, with approximately 17 billion cards being manufactured annually!

Traditional plastic used for making credit cards is PVC (Polyvinyl chloride). PVC, also known as vinyl, is not easily recycled because of the additives used to manufacture it and it can last hundreds of years in a landfill. It is commonly used for credit cards because of its sturdiness, giving it a life expectancy of sixty years and able to withstand repeated use. However, since credit cards usually expire in about 2 to 4 years, this type of durability seems a bit unnecessary.

PET (Poly Ethylene Terephtalate) is recyclable plastic, and it requires 2/3 less energy to manufacture goods. In addition to requiring less sulphur dioxide and less nitrous oxide, it also reduces water consumption by 90%. Products used with PET, or PETE, are marked with a recycling code of “1”. While PET is fully recyclable, if it ends up in a landfill it can take an estimated 500 years to biodegrade.

PLA (Poly lactic acid) cards are made from corn starch and can be commercially composted in 30-45 days or biodegraded in a landfill like organic waste (food). PLA is becoming more commonly used as its prices become more competitive with PET, which is approximately 20% more expensive than PVC.

Discover More Card Benefits

In addition to protecting the environment, the Biodegradable Discover More credit card offers more benefits to its cardholders. There are no annual fees and the promotional rate currently in effect is 0% APR on balance transfers up to 12 months as well as on purchases up to 6 months. Balance transfer fees of 3% still apply. After the promotional period, the interest rate will be as low as a variable 11.99%, but your actual rate will be determined by your credit history.

With Discover More, you get $0 Fraud Liability included at no charge. You will be contacted immediately if the Discover fraud team suspects suspicious activity on your account. Their specialists are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Additional security is also available with Secure Online Account Numbers so you can shop at ease without worrying about your credit card information getting cyber-jacked.

Discover More Cashback Rewards

The Cashback Rewards program offered by Discover Card has always been one of their biggest benefits. Unlike other rewards programs that give you limited mileage or unreasonably “priced” merchandise, the Biodegradable Discover More credit card gives you the full Cashback Rewards program that cardholders have always appreciated.

With unlimited rewards, you can earn up to 1% cash back on all of your purchases. You are also able to enroll for free in various categories to qualify for 5% cash back. The categories change every so often, usually quarterly, and range in interest from dining to home improvements to gas and travel or even groceries. If you shop online with ShopDiscover you automatically earn 5% to 20% from their online retailers. From Ace hardware to Zales jewelry, there are hundreds of merchants in the network.

Earning your Cashback is automatic, and redeeming your rewards is almost as easy. You can trade in your rewards and earn even more by redeeming them with one of the 100 plus Partners set up with Discover. You can use your rewards to receive merchandise and pay no sales tax or shipping costs. Of course, since the name of the rewards program is Cashback, you also have the option of requesting the monetary value of your rewards. With the Cashback option, you can request a check, a direct deposit, or a statement credit. Charitable donations can also be made through the program.

The Discover More credit card comes with a great rewards program and the promotional rate makes it a really nice offer. The Biodegradable feature almost makes this card mandatory. Apply for the Biodegradable Discover More credit card now for free and start shopping green!
