The Problem with Plastic
Discover Card has now added a biodegradable card option, being the first company to offer a truly green credit card. The card is made of 99% biodegradable plastic, which means it will break down by 99% within five years of being in a landfill without leaving a toxic effect. This is huge news considering in the United States alone it is estimated that there will be more than a billion and a half cards in circulation during the year 20101. Add the projected 185 million debit cards and we’re talking about a landfill nightmare. Now consider the worldwide effect of credit card production, with approximately 17 billion cards being manufactured annually!
Traditional plastic used for making credit cards is PVC (Polyvinyl chloride). PVC, also known as vinyl, is not easily recycled because of the additives used to manufacture it and it can last hundreds of years in a landfill. It is commonly used for credit cards because of its sturdiness, giving it a life expectancy of sixty years and able to withstand repeated use. However, since credit cards usually expire in about 2 to 4 years, this type of durability seems a bit unnecessary.
PET (Poly Ethylene Terephtalate) is recyclable plastic, and it requires 2/3 less energy to manufacture goods. In addition to requiring less sulphur dioxide and less nitrous oxide, it also reduces water consumption by 90%. Products used with PET, or PETE, are marked with a recycling code of “1”. While PET is fully recyclable, if it ends up in a landfill it can take an estimated 500 years to biodegrade.
PLA (Poly lactic acid) cards are made from corn starch and can be commercially composted in 30-45 days or biodegraded in a landfill like organic waste (food). PLA is becoming more commonly used as its prices become more competitive with PET, which is approximately 20% more expensive than PVC.

Earning your Cashback is automatic, and redeeming your rewards is almost as easy. You can trade in your rewards and earn even more by redeeming them with one of the 100 plus Partners set up with Discover. You can use your rewards to receive merchandise and pay no sales tax or shipping costs.
