Forever 21 History
The first Forever 21 store was opened 27 years ago in April of 1984 in Los Angeles. The store was originally named Fashion 21. In just one year, the store’s sales grew from a respectable $35,000 to an unbelievable $700,000. Because of the store’s success, the founder took the profit and reinvested it into the business. A new Fashion 21 store was opened every six months during this period and the store name was eventually changed to Forever 21.
The first Forever 21 store that was opened in a mall was opened in 1989. Since then Forever 21 has become a constant mall fixture. Forever 21 was exclusively a California store until 1995 when a store was opened in Miami, FL. Continuing to open a new store every six months by 1997, there were 40 Forever 21 stores throughout the United States.
Between 1997 and 2005, the Forever 21 brand has expanded significantly. There are now over 350 Forever 21 stores in the United States. In the beginning, a new Forever 21 store was opened every six months and now there are up to 90 new Forever 21 stores opened in the country every year.
What began, as a simple 900 square foot store in Los Angeles has become a world-recognized brand. In 2006, Forever 21 opened a flagship store in Pasadena, California that is two stories and more than 40,000 square feet.
