A fraud alert is a warning provided to a consumer or business by a credit monitoring agency notifying the customer of a potential identity theft attempt. Often a financial institution will monitor the buying habits of a customer, notifying them of an uncharacteristic purchase made by their credit card. When an attempt is made to open a line of credit or obtain a loan by fraudulent use of someone else’s identity, a similar alert may also be triggered.
