Founders Don and Doris Fischer opened Gap’s first store in 1969. It all began with one store and today Gap, Inc. has more than 3,000 stores throughout the world and employees almost 135,000 people.
The Gap saw such success in the beginning that the company went public only seven years after the first store was opened. As a way to share their success and help worthy causes, the Fischers started the Gap Foundation in 1977 as a nonprofit charitable organization.
Before it was acquired by the Gap in 1983, the Banana Republic was a mail-order only store with only two stores. Once it became a part of the Gap, Inc. family, it saw exponential growth. The first Gap Kids store was opened in 1986. The very first Old Navy store was opened in 1994. Piperlime is an only online store that Gap, Inc. started in 2006 and the most recent Gap, Inc. requisition, Athleta, was acquired in 2008.
