GNC History
The first GNC store was opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1935 by David Shakarian. It began as a simple health food store that sold yogurt, grains, honey, and special sandwiches. Within six months, a second store was opened even though at that time health food stores were considered a fad.
These first two stores were destroyed in 1936 by a flood on St. Patrick’s Day. David Shakarian ended up opening both shops again and saw his total number of stores expand to six over the next five years.
By the 1960’s a store like GNC was no longer considered just a fad and was fully embraced. Since then GNC has become the leading and most recognized store for vitamins, herbal supplements, sports nutrition products, and products for diet and energy. More than 75 years after that first store was opened GNC has almost 5,000 stores in the United States and has expanded into more than 45 markets worldwide.
The GNC Gold Card
While GNC does not currently offer their own store credit card they do offer a special membership card program. The GNC Gold Card costs only $15 a year. This membership card allows members to save 20 percent on the day that they join as well as the first seven days of each month for an entire year.
GNC members also receive special emails and mailed information about upcoming sales and new products. This card can be bought in the store or through their official website.
