Customers of Macy’ s department store have access to two kinds of credit cards. The first is the line of in-house cards issued by Department Stores National Bank. The second, which is also brand new as of August 2010, is the Macy’s American Express (Amex).
Both types of cards can be used for purchases in Macy’s stores or online, but the American Express card can be used anywhere Amex is accepted. Various rewards are earned with the Amex reward credit card depending on what goods or services were purchased, and where they were purchased.

Macy’s Credit Card – In House Line
Macy’s offers four different levels of in-house credit cards. They can be used only for purchases made through the Macy’s web site or at a local retail outlet. Each level of these retail credit cards has an annual spending limit attached to it, and is issued based on credit worthiness.
- The Red card allows for spending between $0 and $499.99 annually
- The Gold card allows between $500 and $999.99
- The Platinum allows between $1,000 and $2,499.99
- The Elite allows $2,500 or more
The interest rate on all four cards is 24.5%. High, but on par with most retail credit card offers.
Macy’s Credit Card – American Express
The Macy’s Amex is issued and managed by Citi. Applicants can chose to apply for the regular or Preferred card with varying levels of benefits for each. Every Macy’s Amex customer receives special Daily Wish sales opportunities three day per week. Members with Preferred cards earn exclusive travel credit card rewards. Both cards offer access to American Express travel service and discounts, online account management, and 24-hour customer service.
Macy’s will review all Macy’s Visa accounts to establish eligibility for the American Express card. Accounts that qualify will be automatically transferred at no cost to the card holder. All balances, credit limits, and earned points will be carried over to the new account. Customers who have only the in-house card are not affected by the switch. Compare credit card offers today!
