Merchant Category Codes

Merchant category codes are four digit numbers given to a company that accepts Visa or MasterCard credit cards. These numbers are used to categorize the type of business and the merchandise being sold. There are general categories, which are then broken down further. There are different codes for the same category when the product or service is sold to another business. The codes can be useful in determining the status for IRS purposes.
