Mileage Rewards

With the Miles by Discover Card you are allowed to use your card to travel anywhere at any time with no restrictions or blackout dates. This allows for your choice in airlines, cruise ships, hotels, and car rental facilities. You are able to book your trip directly through an airline, an online travel portal, or with a travel agent and still earn your rewards.

For every $3,000 you spend on your card in a year on travel and restaurants, you will can earn double the rewards miles, giving you 6,000 miles for those purchases. You can also earn double mileage rewards by shopping through ShopDiscover, an online shopping network. This means you will receive 2 miles for every $1 you spend. For all of your other purchases you will receive 1 mile for every $1 you charge. The number of miles you can earn is unlimited!

There are several ways to redeem the mileage rewards you earn. If you are interested in travel credits, you can receive $100 for every 10,000 miles earned. Starting with a minimum of 1,000 mile rewards, you can redeem your rewards for gift cards with over 90 Discover Card partners. If you prefer merchandise, you can trade in your rewards and pay no tax or shipping charges.

Another option is to use your rewards as gifts for other people. For just 5,000 miles you can get a $25 Discover Card gift card. Alternatively, you also have the option of donating $25 to a charity. If you prefer to see your miles rewarded to you as cash, you can choose to have your account credited or receive an electronic bank deposit instead. You can do this in increments of $25 for every 5,000 miles you earn.

Terms and Conditions of the Miles by Discover Credit Card

Travelers can enjoy the Miles by Discover card for no annual fee. The current promotional rate in effect is 0% for purchases until July, 2010. The rate then goes to a variable rate between 11.99% and 18.99%. Balance transfers are also 0% for six months and then goes to the purchase APR. Cash advances are a variable rate of 23.99%. Your default APR is variable between 16.99% and 23.99%.

As is standard with most credit cards, there are fees associated with certain transactions. Balance transfer fees are 3% of the transfer amount and cash advances are subject to a 5% transaction fee. Late fees are calculated at $19 on balances of up to $250 and $39 on all higher balances. Previously, if you went over your limit, you would have been charged over limit fees of $15 on balances of $500 or less and $39 on balances higher than $500. However, effective February 1, 2010, Discover Card is no longer charging over limit fees on the Miles by Discover Credit Card.

As a Discover Card holder, you are given several additional benefits as part of your membership. Customer service call center response time is less than 60 seconds, so there is no longer lengthy hold times when you need to talk to someone about your credit card. You also receive automatic fraud protection with a $0 fraud liability guarantee that protects you if unauthorized charges are made with your credit card.

Discover Card allows a cash back feature that is available at many participating retailers, such as grocery stores. With this feature you are allowed to request a cash back amount that will be added to your total charge purchase without the cost of ATM fees or other transaction fees. The cash back feature is not treated as a cash advance, but rather as part of your purchase. For example, if you spend $100 at the grocery store and request $20 cash back, your grocery store purchase will be for a grand total of $120. You will go home with your $100 of groceries and $20 cash in your wallet. Your credit card statement will reflect a purchase from your grocer for $120.
