Teaching kids fiscal responsibility is important, especially when it comes to credit cards. Keep reading to see if this is the right option for you and your family.

PAYjr Prepaid Credit Card Overview

The PAYjr Prepaid Credit Card is not a regular credit card or like typical student credit cards. Your children will not be establishing credit by using this card and it does not report to the credit scoring agencies. The upside here is that you don’t pay any interest rates on the money you spend, when the money is gone, you can’t use the card.

Like all prepaid credit cards PAYjr has a lot of fees. You will pay $9.95 to enroll in the PAYjr program and then pay a fee of $4.95 a month. In addition, there are fees to speak with customer service, to use an ATM, to withdraw money from your account and more.

There is limited fraud liability for the PAYjr card. If you report your card missing immediately, then you are not liable for any of the money that is spent. If you report it a couple of hours later and up to 2 days later, you are only liable for 50% of what is spent. After 2 days, then you are liable for the whole amount.

PAYjr Prepaid Credit Card Benefits

These are great programs and I think they will go mainstream any month now. There are several cards like this, Mastercard has one called Myplash and Visa has another called Buxx. These are all great companies and they provide plenty of positives for teens and parents alike. If the parents can teach their kids about money management from a young age it will only benefit everyone.

I got the Payjr card for my 14 year old and we were all excited! He used it for a whole month….and then he was manually locked out from his card and online account…….I emailed customer service…no response…..I have now emailed them again A MONTH LATER to cancel this card. They have very poor customer service….oh and while the manual lock out is still in effect and I have yet to hear from ANYONE they are still collecting their 4.95 monthly fee =)

Tried twice to sign up for a card that my son could use. Twice the online enrollment failed to save his information, but yet it DID manage to save MY credit Card information and put a hold against my card for both “transactions”. When you try to contact Pay JR customer service you will find that “that line is no longer in service” and if you DO manage to get a hold of anyone at the 800 number they just give you the same number that is out of service and tell you they can do nothing else.

COMPLETE FRAUD! STAY AWAY from PayJR.

This is the worst company ever. I have called three times to activate my son’s card and still no success. I made two deposits which were not added to his card until I called yet another number. Now that I want to cancel the card they tell me I can’t that it will need to be activated and I will need to use the money on the card because they don’t issue refunds and placed me on hold two times for a total of 25 minutes. I ended up calling another number and I had to activate the card and now go to the ATM to get my money back. I would not recommend getting this card for your child. ABSOLUTLEY A COMPLETE FRAUD!!!
