If you are anything like me then you hate all of the recently imposed baggage fees on many of the major airlines. Personally, I love flying Southwest (who has no baggage fees) and try to fly Southwest if at all possible but I did come across one pretty nifty perk lately in the way of avoiding airline baggage fees at Delta (who is rumored to be in merger talks with Continental so it could very well be that you can avoid both Delta and Continental baggage fees in the future).
The American Express Delta credit card recently announced that beginning June 1, 2010 cardholders will be able to check one bag free on all Delta flights. This extends to up to 9 people on the same reservation so if you have a large family or even if you fly Delta frequently then the Delta credit card, although it has an annual fee, may end up well worth your while.
The standard Delta baggage fee is $25 so at a savings of $50 for every round trip Delta flight the savings could be quite useful to some. Or, you could just fly Southwest ![]()

this is great insight and an awesome tip thanks for that – i hate fees and this is a little scratch my back and ill scratch yours. huge fan.
The card charges $95 a year just for the privilege of having the card. Unless you are traveling and checking bags multiple times a year, you’ll probably pay more in annual fees than in baggage fees. Also, be aware that if you have additional cardholders, they are NOT eligible for this. I found this out the hard way after booking specifically with Delta for the ability to check a bag for free, only to find out when checking in that if you are not the primary cardholder, you still have to pay for your bag and don’t get this “perk.”
Of course, this is why Delta made millions of dollars TAX FREE in bag fees last year, more than any other airline. Best way to make tons of money is by screwing over your customers! God bless America!
The annual fee for the card is waived the first year!
