Spoilage refers to an amount of money that has “gone bad”. If a person acquires a gift card and makes a purchase that is less than the amount on the card, the unused amount of money left on the card is often referred to as spoilage, or breakage.
In order to avoid spoilage on a gift card account it is best to either use up the full amount on the card or cash out the unused amount.
