Joining the United Federal Credit Union
Credit unions do not have an open-door customer policy like banks do.
Instead, they require membership based on where someone lives or for what company they work.
This credit union, for instance, allows people that live in Michigan, Nevada, Arkansas, Ohio, North Carolina, Indiana, or eastern Oklahoma to join. Even if someone does not meet the requirements to join, they could still become a member if they are related to a current member. Eligible relatives include children, spouses, parents, grandparents, adopted relatives, grandchildren, stepchildren, stepsiblings, and stepparents.
Many people feel that credit unions offer more personalized service than banks. In addition, you might want to look into credit cards from credit unions because they typically have lower interest rates and more generous terms.
